mesmerizing harmonies, and a little southern grit

The first time I heard The Civil Wars was when I came upon one of their homemade YouTube videos. It was just the two of them. Jon Paul White played acoustic, Joy Williams was wearing something girly and cute, and… they sang. It was simple. It was enchanting. And, I was obsessed.

There’s something about the chemistry between these two talented musicians that is wonderfully rare. Their sound is addictive, and their words are raw, disguising even the most gloomy of lyrics as lullabies.

I was so excited that they came to The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC this past March. The 4 hr roundtrip drive in a torrential downpour was completely worth it (and, almost more fitting than if we were to drive during a sunny day. They seem more like a rainy-day-listen to me).

We stood, packed, shoulder-to-shoulder, for a good 2 hours…singing, swaying, listening. It was a perfect evening.

At 5’6, I did the best I could to get some shots in a room full of tall people.

Here are a few of my favorites. When you’re done checking these out, go buy their album, Barton Hollow. You WILL NOT be disappointed- I promise.
